Google Plus vs Facebook for Social Supremacy

Written by Sean Redfearn
google vs facebook for social media

Are you one of the Facebook defectors now Google Plus has arrived

Having only been out for less than a month but with over 10 million signups, Google Plus has certainly made a big mark on society and social media. Users have been so impressed with new Google Plus that they are defecting from Facebook and signing up to Google Plus.

Many people are now beginning to post ‘I have moved’ messages as their status indicating they are changing to Google Plus. Many users are quickly deleting their Facebook accounts and moving across. However, are they being too hasty by defecting so quickly? Facebook has over 750 million users and is seen as the ‘king’ of social networking. Google Buzz came and went before anyone noticed. So, will Facebook stand the test of this new kid on the block or will it loose its crown to Google Plus?

This article explains both social networks, leaving you to make up your mind on will win the battle.

Any avid social networker will know that he battle lines have been drawn between Facebook and Google Plus but only one can rein supreme in the social networking industry. So far it looks like Google Plus is winning fans with their social network. A person love the design, simplicity and features notably the privacy feature which gives you total control on the information you share giving Google Plus the first round points. Privacy in Facebook has been an issue for many fans and has been the reason people have defected. However, Facebook soon hit back and fired a hit straight into the heart of Google Plus by introducing a video and group chat feature which enables free chat in groups.

Everyone who is internet savvy will know that both Facebook and Google have two things in common:

  • They dominate their respective areas.
  • Both are competing for the title ‘King of the Internet’.

In 2010 Facebook edged passed Google and took the number one spot for most visited internet site in the USA. To compare both these sites would be like comparing oranges and apples in the sense you cannot possibly compare a search engine that returns anything you ask it to find with a social networking site. However, Facebook and Google do compete for attention.

Google Plus also has advantages over Facebook. A host of inbuilt features which are not available in Facebook:

  • Hangouts – Video chat in groups
  • Sparks – Get the news (Not the News Feed)
  • Keep Your Social Circles Secret
  • See what Strangers are saying (the “incoming” feature)
  • Hang out with people you don’t know (Hangouts not limited to mutual friends)
  • Embedded into Gmail (The inbox)

Facebook has the advantage of allowing business pages, something Google Plus will introduce at a later date. Once they achieve this it will be a major plus point for Google.

It has to be said if Google Plus achieved 10 million hits in less than a month they will soon catch up with Facebook. However, no matter which social networking platform you choose to use both are here to stay.  While Google is winning with the privacy feature, how long will it be before they slip up with privacy issues?

The underlying question that you should ask your self is, ‘If I leave Facebook not all my friends and family will?” This is true not everyone will move across to Google Plus so leaving Facebook means you lose the connections.  Social media platforms are about staying in touch with people. Why leave a social media network if you still have friends on the network?

Overall, both platforms are similar so it is very unlikely Facebook will see a mass exodus. At the moment Google Plus is app free, add free and not many young kids are on it. However, in time this will all appear.  Google Plus is just another social network in the wheel that you need to keep up with if you have the time. For those already hooked to Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Gowalla, blogs and Linked In – will that time be available?

At the moment it is too early to tell if Google Plus will survive in the social network circus and even too early to start full comparisons with Facebook.  Time will tell if Google Plus is here to stay or not.
